KASS Now Has 2 New Patent Agents
We congratulate Ms. K. Geetha and Ms. N. Puvaneswarri on their success in the recent Malaysian Patent Agent Examination. We delight in their accomplishment and welcome the addition of new agents within the KASS team to better serve your IP needs.
Cost-Cutting Measures by the European Patent Office
In view of the current global economy crisis, several cost-cutting measures have been introduced by the European Patent Office, the European Union Trade Marks and Designs Registration Office, and the Japanese Patent Office in order to reduce the financial burden of applicants who may be affected by the crisis.
European Patent Office (EPO)
The recent London Agreement that was enforced since May 2008 stipulates that European patents that are filed in France, Germany, UK, Switzerland and Monaco no longer require a translation into their respective native languages as before. This would be a tremendous nudge in the direction of cost reduction in filing for patents in Europe as translation costs can reach up to 25% of filing costs. This anticipated reduction of costs will translate to businesses finding it easier to protect their ideas and market new inventions.

Non-Traditional Marks in Malaysia
The Intellectual Property Corporation of Malaysia (MyIPO) has informed the public that it intends to widen the scope of trademarks recognized under the Trade Marks Act 1976 in Malaysia by including Non-traditional Trademarks (NTMs) in three years time.
NTMs are basically new types of trademarks which do not belong to the pre-existing or conventional category of trademarks. NTMs are registrable in countries such as the United States, the European Union, Japan and Australia, but have been relatively unheard of until recently in Malaysia.
On 4 March 2009, MyIPO’s, director-general, Mr. Kamel Mohamad, said with the inclusion of NTMs, an individual or businesses could now register a trade mark such as sound, colour, smell, taste and texture or combination of one or more of these elements.
